RI museums consider relocating sarcophagus

12-03-2009

The museum of the Rhode Island School of Design hopes to acquire a sarcophagus from the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium in Providence to add to its collection of funeral pieces and artifacts from centuries ago.

The transfer of the white marble coffin, believed to have been carved in the 18th century, was set to take place last week until Providence city officials said they wanted to review the agreement further.

If everything goes as originally planned, the RISD Museum would display the sarcophagus with other funerary pieces. The marble used to create the coffin is believed to have come from the island of Proconnesus — now part of modern-day Turkey — sometime in the late 2nd or early 3rd century.
