A Metropolis Nuremberg with a High Quality of Life

Updated:2009-05-23 11:12:00

Nuremberg – more than meets the eye

Nuremberg was already a centre of trade and commerce in medieval times. People came here to do business and the city with its excellent craftsmen and convenient location was renowned at that time as a marketplace in the middle of Europe. And this has not changed! Business is still flourishing in the Metropolitan Region of Nuremberg today.

Good accessibility a decisive factor!

One decisive factor for this success is certainly the location’s good accessibility. Whether you travel by car, rail or air – Nuremberg is always within easy and convenient reach.

Nuremberg boasts a unique mixture of tradition and modern times. Both people born here and people who moved here appreciate its extraordinary quality of life. At the same time, Nuremberg is a modern city with 500,000 inhabitants, and the centre of a prospering European metropolitan region with 2.5 million inhabitants. Its almost thousand years of history are still obvious in its cityscape.

Family and Social Issues

In Nuremberg, young and old, newly arrived and long established people live together in harmony. Families feel at home here, too. This is helped by an affordable cost of living, continually improved child-care facilities, and a high level of security. The "Bündnis für Familie" – Pact for Families – is a model initiative supported by a wide variety of social groups, aimed at making the city even more attractive for families. There is a wide variety of educational choices and possibilities for development and involvement for children and young people.

The issues and concerns of older citizens are voiced by the very committed City's Senior Citizens Council. In senior citizens' meeting points, computer and video clubs, Nuremberg's over 50's citizens are making their active contribution to the city's life.

Over 18 per cent of Nuremberg's inhabitants are foreign nationals, about a third of all citizens come from a migration background. The different groups of the population live as good neighbours, with an emphasis on tolerant co-existence.

Voluntary work plays a major role in the city. Whether it is in sports, in culture, in the churches or in social work – Nuremberg's citizens make their voluntary contribution to the city's life.

A close network of advice and support centres, organised both by the City of Nuremberg and other organisations, is available for people in serious social difficulties.

Education and Labour

Complete Education Spectrum

A complete spectrum of general education and vocational schools, as well as of further education and in-service training facilities, plus several universities and colleges ensure that young people have the best possible chances for high level education and training. State and municipal institutions of all school types and a comprehensive spectrum of vocational schools make Nuremberg a "school city".

The Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences as well as the Education Faculty of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, the Music Academy, the Art Academy, the Georg-Simon-Ohm University of Applied Sciences and the Protestant College make Nuremberg a university location with an overall number of 16,000 students. Together with the university faculties located in Erlangen, over 34,000 young people attend university in the conurbation.

The municipal library – Germany's oldest municipal library – and the City Archives, one of the largest of its kind in the entire Federal Republic, are much frequented institutions catering for city history and cultural history.

Nuremberg Adult Education Centre, With about 6,500 courses and events offered annually, is one of Germany's largest adult education centres. Courses cover a wide spectrum from artistic design to language courses and professional and in-service career training.

Labour Market

Nuremberg is the economic, services and cultural centre of Northern Bavaria and the central focus of the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region, with about 2.5 million inhabitants. About 347,000 people are currently employed in roughly 22,000 companies and institutions. The entire conurbation has a working population of nearly 700,000 people.

Two Federal offices have their headquarters in Nuremberg: the Federal Labour Agency and the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.

The Nuremberg economy occupies a good position within the overall Federal ranking. Nuremberg unemployment figures are below the Federal average. Of the major cities, only Munich, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Düsseldorf have lower unemployment rates.
