Clean a Marble Top Table

Updated:2013-10-30 13:49:48
Marble is a form of limestone, a soft calcium based stone that may contain a variety of impurities from materials such as sand, silt, iron or clay. These impurities give marble its unique color and patterns. Items manufactured from marble, including decorative pieces and functional furniture such as tables and counters, are prized for their appearance. Marble is, in general, a soft stone that can be easily damaged or stained. Gentle care of a marble tabletop is necessary to keep the table looking its best.

Instructions as follows:

Firstly, blot stains with a soft cloth as soon as they happen. If a stain has been sitting long enough to dry, dampen stain with water and blot. Do not wipe stains, if possible, as this could increase damage.
Secondly, make a solution of one part baking soda to nine parts water for general cleaning. For tough stains, make a thick paste of baking soda and water and apply the paste to stains, soaking for several minutes. Mild dish soap of diluted hydrogen peroxide may also be used for stain removal.
Thirdly, wipe the table gently with the baking soda/water solution and a soft cloth.
Fourthly, rinse the baking soda solution thoroughly from the table with cool water.
Fifthly, dry the table with a soft cloth. Allowing the table to air dry may leave it looking dull.
Sixthly, polish the tabletop with clear marble wax, if desired. Wax will protect the table from damage and keep the luster of the marble intact.
Tips & Warnings
Make cleaning easier by protecting marble tabletops; use coasters when placing beverages on the table and always clean up spills immediately. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for care of marble tables.
Marble can be easily scratched by dishes or metal objects. Use trivets or protective mats under any hard object placed on a marble table. Never use abrasives to clean a marble table top. Additionally, products containing alcohol or citrus extracts could seriously damage a marble surface and should not be used for cleaning marble tables. Do not use white wax, as this may leave the finish looking dull or yellow.
