Cleaning Products for Travertine Tile

Travertine is a stone similar to marble that is cut into tiles and laid into countertops, or, more commonly, floors. All stone is porous and requires sealing to protect the surface. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your tile regarding the types of sealant to use and how often to seal your travertine tile. Cleaning your travertine tile is relatively simple, but take care which products you use.

  Daily Cleaning

Dust mop your travertine tile flooring daily to keep dirt from sticking to the tile and creating a bigger mess. Wipe up any spills immediately, and, if needed, use pH-neutral cleaners. Dishwashing liquids work well on travertine tile; mix 1 tsp. mild dishwashing liquid with water in a spray bottle, and spray the tile lightly, or add 1 tbsp. of dish liquid to a gallon of water and mop the tile. Regardless, rinse the tile well to remove all of the cleanser. Grout needs only a light scrubbing with a soft brush. Avoid white vinegar or other acidic cleansers because they will pit the travertine and eat away at the grout.

Heavier Cleaning

For those times when you need heavier cleaning for your travertine tile, use the same cleaning products that you use for everyday cleaning. To tackle heavier grime, allow the cleaners to sit on the tile for a longer period. As with daily cleaning, rinse the tile well after cleaning.

If your travertine tile develops stains, make a poultice of baking soda or salt. Mix the baking soda or salt with just enough water to form a paste, and spread the poultice just over the edge of the stain. Cover the poultice with plastic wrap, and tape the edges to seal them. Leave the baking soda or salt in place until it is completely dry; remove the plastic wrap, and rinse the tile well. If the poultice has not completely removed the stain, repeat the process.
