Cover an Old Brick Fireplace

Updated:2013-10-28 14:56:01
Fireplaces are synonymous with soot, meaning that they can look old and dingy after even a few years. Old brick can either be gorgeous or an eyesore, depending on its color and shape and when it was installed. Upgrading your fireplace is an instant transformation to your living space. Your fireplace is the focal point of your living room and the whole room should center on that roaring fire. Brick that is old or the wrong color can turn a great fireplace into an eyesore. Covering the brick up with wood is an easy and manageable project for any homeowner.

Instructions as follows:

Firstly, lay the panel face down and measure the distance from the edge of the panel to the mounting cleat. A mounting cleat is an indentation on the back of the panel that allows it to be attached to the stone wall.
Secondly, mark the brick with a marker to indicate where you'll hang the panel.
Thirdly, measure the indentations inside the panels to determine the correct size for the mounting cleats, using a tape measure. Cut the mounting cleats from the two-by-four, using a hand or circular saw. Cut to fit snugly inside the spaces inside the mantel.
Fourthly, hold the cleat against the brick wall according to your mark. Drill a hole through the cleat and into the brick with a masonry drill bit. Insert a plastic masonry anchor into the brick. Attach the cleats to the wall with deck screws and a Phillips-head screwdriver.
Fifthly, position the panels over the cleats. Attach the panel to the cleat with finish nails and a hammer. Use a nail every six to eight inches. Fill the nail holes with wood putty.
Tips & Warnings
You can get your panels from a cabinet maker or carpenter. The panels must be custom-designed to fit your space.
Request that the cabinet maker provides spaces in the back of the panels to allow for mounting cleats. A mounting cleat is two-by-four piece of wood that will attach directly to the brick.
