Grind Concrete Countertops

Updated:2013-08-05 15:51:20
Concrete countertop straight from the mold have only a minimal finish to the surface. The mold itself creates a level but flawed surface that still requires grinding to achieve an acceptable level of smoothness. Not only does grinding the countertop create a surface that's smooth to the touch, it's also necessary for revealing any decorative add-ins that you may have placed into the concrete mix before pouring the concrete into the mold. The grinding procedure utilizes a handheld electric grinder and a polisher equipped with diamond grinding pads, along with a few hand-finishing pads for hard-to-reach areas.

Instructions as follows:

Firstly, attach a 100-grit grinding pad to the grinder. Put on a respirator to protect your lungs from inhaling silica particles from the countertop, and safety goggles to protect your eyes from flying sand. Sand the edges and corners of the countertop to round off the sharpness left by the concrete mold. Run the grinder over the edge, working in multiple passes to curve the edges as desired.

Secondly, wipe down the surface of the countertop with a damp cloth and denatured alcohol.

Thirdly, switch to a 180-grit grinding pad and go over the surface of the granite countertop, removing any imperfections and smoothing out the concrete.

Fourthly, install a finer-grit pad in the grinder. Go over the surface again, smoothing it out even more and adding a slight shine to the concrete. Continue to change the pad in the grinder, working with successively finer grits with each pass over the countertop until you achieve the level of shine you want.

Fifthly, buff with hand finishing pads on hard-to-reach sections of the marble countertop, such as corners, rubbing in small circles until the surface is shiny.
