Ideas for Landscaping With Slate Rock

Updated:2013-11-29 16:14:23
Slate rock can add a gorgeous touch to any landscaping design. While it isn't ideal to use as a patio or walkway because it can be very slippery when wet, it looks attractive as an accent to existing walkways, patios and yards. In addition, slate rock comes in many shapes and sizes, so using it in multiple places adds a dramatic touch. Because slate is a type of river rock, it can withstand severe temperature shifts and excessive water. It doesn't crack or become worn easily and is very durable.
Flower Bed Accent or Border
Use slate as a border or accent to any existing flower bed or to surround a tree, shrub or other plant, which separates the existing plants from the grass or other landscaping and gives it an individual look. By stacking the slate pieces on top of one another, you can build a wall-like border. Making this stone wall at least 6 inches high is recommended to give the area its own dramatic appeal and also to keep any mulch or soil in place around the plants within its borders.
Pond Waterfall
Because slate is thin and comes in so many different shapes, it can be an excellent way to add a cascading waterfall to a pond. Slate typically ranges in width from 1/2 to 6 inches and comes in large or small slabs. Stack these slabs on top of one another in varying orders so they look like steps. Run a hose attached to a water pump within the pond up to the top of the stones so that the water trickles down the slate rocks. Slate looks awesome when it is wet, and oftentimes new colors and shines emerge from the rock as it gets wet, further adding to its beauty.
Benches
Another way to add slate to a landscape design is to incorporate seating into various parts of the yard. For instance, building seating underneath a shaded tree in the yard using slate and/or other stones is a perfect way to add individualism to the property. To build seating using slate, use one large piece of slate and place it over two chair leg-like stacks of slate or other durable rock. Or if there is an existing border around the tree, simply build up more slate in one area, and place the largest piece on top to act as a seat.
