IMF sends staff member to Greece at EU request

Updated:2010-02-23 11:12:30

The International Monetary Fund said on Monday that a staff member was in Athens at the request of the European Union Commission to help Greece cope with its debt crisis.

"At the request of the EU Commission and at the invitation of the Greek authorities, a fund staff member is in Athens this week to provide assistance to an EU Commission team," an IMF official said in a statement.

The IMF did not provide any further details.

Earlier Monday, the EU Commission said that there was no plan to provide financial aid worth over 20 billion euros (27.3 billion U.S. dollars) to Greece.

German weekly Der Spiegel reported on Saturday that Germany was leading a joint effort with other eurozone members to provide heavily indebted Greece with a financial aid worth from 20 to 25 billion euros.
