Industrial electricity consumption of Brazil back to pre-crisis level

The electricity consumption in Brazil's industrial sector returned to the level before the international financial crisis, Brazil's Energy Research Company (EPE) announced Wednesday.

According to EPE, the country's industrial electricity consumption reached 15,327 gigawatt-hours in April, up 13 percent from the same period in 2009. The southeastern region, where at least a third of Brazil's industries are concentrated, registered the highest increase.

The country's total electricity consumption reached 35,366 gigawatt-hours in April, up 9.1 percent from the same period last year.

The growth rates of electricity consumption in the residential and commercial sectors reached 7.7 percent and 5.7 percent in April respectively, compared to the same period last year.

In the first four months of 2010, national electricity consumption was up 9.5 percent compared to the same period in 2009. Consumption in the industrial sector was up 13 percent in the period.

In addition, consumption in the May 2009 to April 2010 period grew 2.7 percent, compared to the previous 12-month period.
