Introduction of Ashlar

Updated:2013-05-07 11:45:30

In construction, there are different types of building materials for walls, path or walkways, patios and other outdoor applications. In addition to concrete and brick as a material, stone is often one of the more resilient and attractive choices.

Stone for construction purposes comes in three basic types: one is the rubble, another one is flagstone, and the last one that we would like to introduce to you is the ashlar. While rubble is composed of round rocks of various sizes and flagstone consists of flat pieces, ashlar is dimensioned stone, and is often cut into pieces of uniform thickness for laying in coursed or noncoursed patterns.

Stone is often used for a rugged or natural look in architecture and landscape architecture. Cost is determined by the availability of stone and ashlar: local stone will cost less than stone that has to be shipped or transported from a distance.
