Landscape a Gravel Driveway

Updated:2013-08-05 15:55:50
Gravel driveways can pose a problem for gardeners because the gravel easily sprays into garden beds and lawns. By creating a border between your lawn and gravel driveway, you not only prevent breaking mower blades but also create a clean-looking landscaping aesthetic. Decide what kind of look you want for your border. You can use organic materials, such as wood or stone, to produce a natural effect. Likewise, bricks or plastic trim can provide a classic looking landscape.

Instructions as follows:

Firstly, choose a border material like stone that you want to use to help determine the depth of the trench you will have to create for your border. Stack your bordering material slightly higher than you want your border, because part of the border material will be in a flat trench. For stone borders, you have more of a leeway to make the border varying heights.

Secondly, press a stake where you want your border to begin. Tie a rope or a string to the stake and move along the proposed border staking every two feet as your go.

Thirdly, rake back some of the gravel to keep it out of your way when creating your trench. Dig your trench with a half moon edger. Use a leveler to make sure the bottom of the trench is the same depth.

Fourthly, spray herbicide along the trench to kill off any weeds. Build your border by placing large flat stones on the bottom of the trench. Make sure you place the stones tightly into the trench. Use a spade to shape the trench to the shape of the slab stone.

Fifthly, place another layer of stone that is slightly staggered from the bottom layer. Be sure to use stones that are large and heavy enough to weather wind and rains.

Tips & Warnings

Purchase stone from quarries or gardening supply stores. You can even find stones around your yard or ask a neighbor if you live in a rugged region.
Be cautious when pulling out of your driveway to avoid knocking over your border.
