Make Sandstone Bricks

Updated:2014-06-25 13:38:20
Sandstone is used as a construction material throughout the world. It is an excellent material for exterior cladding and paving because it does not need to be painted, it is durable and hard, and it has low-moisture absorption levels. Natural colors of sandstone range from light brown to red, yellow, gray or a combination of these colors. The bricks are usually cut into blocks and tiles close from the source of the rock. The Jaipur, Bikaner and Agra regions of India, for instance, are regions known both for their quarries and their production of sandstone bricks.

Instructions as follows:

Firstly, cut large blocks of sandstone out of a stone wall with a quarry chainsaw. Some chainsaws can be hand-held, although others are attached to vehicles and require a special license to operate. In any case, extensive training is required to operate this type of machinery.
Secondly, Cut the blocks with the chainsaw into sheet sections with the width you want for the bricks.
Thirdly, draw a template over the rock marking the dimensions you want for the bricks. Score the sandstone sheets along these lines with a circular saw. A groove of 1/4 inch should be enough.
Fourthly, Place the sandstone tile sheet into an industrial rock splitter. Position the sheet so the top blade of the splitter's jaws run along the line of cut. Pull down on the splitter's lever. Correct any imperfections with a hammer and chisel.
