Paint a Cement Floor to Look Like Marble

Updated:2013-10-30 14:26:11
Bare concrete floors can create an eyesore in your home, garage or patio, but you don't have to settle for a dull gray slab. In addition to adding design and color, concrete paints can cover stains or discolored spots on your concrete floors. While a solid color might be improvement, you can add a faux marble effect with a little extra effort. The technique is time-consuming but doesn't require any special skill or equipment.

Instructions as follows:

Firstly, sweep the cement floor thoroughly to remove all dirt and debris, using a broom.
Secondly, scrub any sticky or greasy stains on the cement floor with a stiff-bristle scrub brush and a mixture of 1 gallon of warm water, 1/2 cup vinegar and 2 tbsp. of dish soap. Rinse the cleaner away with water and wipe the floor dry with a clean towel.
Thirdly, sand the floor with an electric sander equipped with 80-grit sandpaper. This will rough up the surface and help the paint adhere properly.
Fourthly, sweep the floor and wait for it to dry completely before you begin painting. If the room is humid or damp, use a dehumidifier to dry the room and the floor.
Fifthly, paint one layer of concrete or masonry primer onto the cement floor with a paint roller. Let the primer dry for at least four hours or the minimum drying time indicated on the label and then apply a second coat of primer. Wait at least 24 hours to give the primer time to dry completely.
Sixthly, apply one coat of white concrete epoxy to the cement floor with a paint roller. Let the epoxy paint dry for at least 24 hours.
Seventhly, sand the cement floor with 300-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface of the primer. Sweep the floor when you finish sanding to remove any dust created.
Eighthly, draw jagged lines on a 3- to 4-foot section of the floor with black acrylic paint and an artist's paintbrush. These lines simulate the natural veins in marble tile.
