Stain a Fence with a Pump Sprayer

Updated:2013-07-29 16:01:12
A wooden fence can really enhance the look of your home and yard. Wooden fences are generally more attractive than drab chain-link fences. One of the drawbacks to wooden fences is the maintenance required to keep them looking nice. Wooden fences can begin to fade and show signs of wear after just a few months. One way to spruce up your wooden fence is to apply a good quality stain. A good stain will protect the metal fence from the elements, as well as help make it look new again. Use a basic pump sprayer to get the job done quickly.

Instructions as follows:

Firstly, use a pressure washer to clean your fence if it is dirty or not newly installed. You do not want to apply your stain to a fence covered with chunks of dirt and mold. If you fence is new, you may not have to clean it first. Allow the fence to dry overnight before applying the stain.

Secondly, stir the stain with a wooden paint stirrer to mix it properly. Pour the stain into the pump sprayer through a coffee filter. This will help strain out any debris or clumps that may clog the sprayer's nozzle.

Thirdly, Place the top on the sprayer. Pump the sprayer the recommended number of times. If your sprayer did not come with instructions, simply pump it until it becomes difficult to pump. You will have enough pressure to spray the stain once it becomes difficult to pump the sprayer.

Fourthly, put on a dust mark and a pair of safety glasses or goggles. You want to avoid inhaling the stain or getting it in your eyes. Sudden wind gusts can cause the stain to fly back and land on your body.

Fourthly, wet the excavated site with a garden hose and begin to tamp and pack the soil down, using a soil tamper. Pound the flat end of the soil tamper down against the ground several times to produce a level patio base. Check the level and adjust as necessary, by adding or removing soil.

Fifthly, pour a two-inch layer of sand into the bottom of the excavated site. Smooth the sand down with a 2x4 board and check the level. Apply a sprinkling of water all over the leveled sand.

Sixthly, tamp the sand down with the soil tamper, checking the level often. Allow the packed and level sand to dry overnight. Cover the sand with a plastic or canvas tarp, if necessary.
