The Advantages of Sandstone over Concrete Block

Updated:2013-10-30 14:12:21

Concrete block is one of the most common building materials used in construction. Sandstone is similar in that it is one of the most popular types of natural stones used in residential and commercial buildings. While both materials have their own unique strengths, their applications are somewhat different since one is structurally designed by man and the other is a natural product from the Earth.

 Rough-In
As you look at building components on a global scale, concrete block is hands down the most popular. This is because concrete block is incredibly strong due to the cement inherent in its mixture. However, blocks are not designed with aesthetics in mind, which means that while they are structurally important to a building, they lack the design elements required by a finish material.
Cement
Blocks are commonly used as base foundation layers for anything from patios to houses or commercial structures. This is because they contain cement, which is one of the hardest building components known to man. Even today, there are structures built by ancient people, for example, the Romans, that are still standing and thus a testament to how strong concrete becomes after it has cured.
Sandstone
When it comes to natural materials used in home construction, sandstone is one of the hardest available. It may be used as flagstone material for building retaining walls and patios, or it may be quarried down into tile formats to be used in interior settings such as bathrooms and kitchen floors. It is naturally slip resistant and is used as a finish material rather than a rough-in material. They come in various colors depending on the place the sandstone was quarried.
Natural Beauty
Sandstone is a naturally beautiful material that can be used in a wide variety of settings. Unlike concrete, which has a plain and somewhat lifeless appearance throughout its uniform grayness, sandstone may contain dozens of colors at once based upon the area it was dug up from. With a range of colors to choose from, you can customize your projects based upon personal preference, while concrete blocks on the other hand are merely gray.
