Types of Designs of Stone Walls

Updated:2014-04-11 13:43:18

Whether your old stone wall is looking a little worse for wear or your yard needs a landscaping update, adding a retaining wall or two can turn a ho-hum yard into a real showstopper. Often used to create multiple levels for aesthetic purposes in landscape design, retaining walls can also help with drainage and erosion issues.

 Mortared Stone

A type of stacked wall with a workable paste in between pieces, mortared stone walls can be constructed from brick, slate, stone or other stone-like building materials. Typically made from mud, clay or cement, mortar is placed between each piece as the pieces are laid. Once the mortar hardens, the wall is set. Although mortared stone walls are used in a variety of places, they work best in places where drainage is not an issue, since hardened mortar does not allow space for water to flow.

Dry Stone
If you want an easy-to-build retaining wall option, try a dry stone wall. Dry stone walls, as the name implies, are made from dry stones fitted and stacked on top of one another. However, if you want your dry stone wall to remain stable, you need to fit the stones together as snugly as possible. If you are planning a taller wall, keep it stable by starting with wider, larger stones at the base and working your way up to smaller paving stones. Dry stone walls usually work well in areas where drainage might be a problem, since the lack of mortar allows water to get through the rocks.

Stone Wall Systems

One of the most common retaining wall options on the market, stone wall systems, are constructed of multiple interlocking blocks that look similar to stone. Available in a variety of colors and sizes, stone wall systems can look like almost any type of stone from brick to limestone to slate, but on the inside, the blocks tend to be open, such as a cement or cinder block. As in a dry stone wall, an interlocking stone wall system also allows water to flow between the stones.
