U.S. durable goods up 0.3 percent in December

Updated:2010-01-29 13:52:07

Orders for U.S.-manufactured durable goods rose 0.3 percent in December, the Commerce Department said Thursday.

The December increase in orders for durable goods, big-ticket items expected to last for at least three years, was much weaker than the 2-percent increase that had been expected.

For December, demand for transportation equipment, which accounts for more than one quarter of total durable goods orders, fell by 2 percent.

Orders for commercial aircraft and parts, a very volatile category, plummeted 38.2 percent in December. However, orders for motor vehicles and parts rose 3.6 percent.

For all of 2009, durable goods orders plunged 20.2 percent, the largest drop on records that go back to 1992, reflecting the serious recession the U.S. manufacturers have witnessed.
