What Can Be Used to Clean a Marble Table?

Updated:2013-09-23 16:15:34

A polished marble table can bring a touch of style to any room. Marble is a light-colored and patterned stone frequently used for decorative building work and furniture. The downside of marble is that it's highly porous and stains easily. Keep your marble table looking pristine by cleaning it regularly.

Distilled Water

The most effective cleaner for everyday use on marble tables is distilled water. Wash the marble tile table with warm distilled water and a microfiber cloth or chamois leather to avoid streaking it. Blot the marble table dry with a clean cloth or old towel. Always place beverage glasses or cups on coasters to avoid leaving moisture rings on the table. Mop up spillages immediately to prevent the marble from staining.
Dish Detergent
Clean the marble table occasionally with warm water and a squeeze of pH neutral household dish detergent. Again, dampen a chamois leather to wipe the table because this prevents water streaks when the table dries. Dab the table dry with a clean cloth or towel. Never use vinegar as an alternative to dish detergent because acidic substances can permanently mark marble.
Marble Polish
Like all polished stone surfaces, everyday usage will dull the surface shine over time. Buy a specialty marble polish-cleaner from a cleaning supply company, home improvement store or a stone merchant. The cleaner-polish will remove ingrained dirt and grime and restore the marble's glossy luster. Apply the cleaner-polish with a dust cloth and buff it to a high shine. Avoid waxing marble surfaces because this can "yellow" them.
Stain Remover
Accidents occasionally happen and spillages left for even a short time will stain marble surfaces. Buy a commercial marble stain remover or make your own stain removal poultice. Mix baking soda with distilled water to create a cleaning paste. Add a dash of rubbing alcohol to the mix for oil-based stains or hydrogen peroxide for water-based stains such as coffee or tea. Dampen the stain with water and spread the mix on to the stained area with a spatula. Tape a plastic sheet over the treatment area and leave it for 24 hours. The poultice should lift out the stain as it dries.
