WTO failure will hurt poor countries more than rich ones

Updated:2008-08-01 10:51:00

The collapse of the Doha Round of World Trade Organization talks in Geneva is a setback that will be felt far more by poor countries than rich ones.

Slowly liberalizing global trade has already lifted hundreds of millions of people in developing countries — an average of about 1.5 million a month for 15 years — out of the worst depths of poverty and into something a little better. But globalization has so far bypassed 50-60 profoundly poor countries that are home to about a billion people. Aid is doing little to better their lot, and the Doha failure dampens any hope to build wealth through trade.

You can access my latest column on the collapse of the talks and its import by clicking here.

Two previous blog entries, both accessible here, will connect you to an earlier column, written when the Doha Round still held some promise, as well as a longer analysis of the importance of trade in fighting mass poverty.
